چکیده

We describe our experiences with using reprogrammable gate arrays in performance-critical digital systems. Our experience indicates that RPGAs are easily integrated into the classroom, but are not yet sufficiently mature to permit comparable integration into a research environment. While reprogrammable gate arrays offer the potential for reduced area and chip count, routing and interconnect issues presently detract from their utility as building blocks in high-performance systems. We believe this is due to asymmetrical advancement rates of hardware and software technology. We point out the principal difficulties with using reprogrammable gate arrays in performance critical designs, and offer suggestions for improvement.

Architectures for high performance image processing: The future

This paper considers the past, present and future of architectures for high performance image processing. After reviewing a number of representative designs of image processing-speci®c architectures, four current approaches are considered in more detail: standard microprocessor technology, DSP processors, parallel processing and dynamically reprogrammable hardware in the form of Field Programma...

Configurable processors for embedded computing - Computer

Computer W e have all heard about the increasing software content of embedded systems. To those who think of embedded software as autonomous programs hidden deep within the system, plugging away transparently and reliably on dedicated tasks, this increase might suggest that these programs are somehow becoming larger. In reality, the ongoing increases in processor performance let system designer...

Co-managing Software and Hardware Modules through the Juggle Middleware

Reprogrammable hardware like Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) is becoming increasingly powerful and affordable. Modern FPGA chips can be reprogrammed at runtime and with low latency which makes them attractive to be used as a dynamic resource in systems. For instance, on mobile devices FPGAs can help to accelerate the performance of critical tasks and at the same time increase the energye...

Certification of FPGAs - Current Issues and Possible Solutions

This paper looks at possible applications of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) within the safety critical domain. We examine the potential benefits these devices can offer, such as parallel computation and reconfiguration in the presence of failure and also the difficulties which these raise for certification. A possible safety argument supporting the use of basic reconfiguration facilitie...
